Golf Inc. - October 2008 - (Page 17) area, it’s near a body of water, it’s windswept and it’s designed to handle excess floodwater runoff. “He came back and presented a concept I thought was brilliant,” Filler said. “A Scottish-links style course that was new and fresh for this area, but also really embraced those four elements.” He said the burns, which run throughout the site, work the way they’re supposed to work. “When I saw that, I knew we had a winner there,” Filler said. The Scottish-style burns resolved much of the drainage issues, but there were other constraints in creating a golf course on a site created by the removal of 10 million cubic yards of dirt. Although Filler was limited to 8-foot mounding, he still managed to create “bumps and mounds that give us contour.” The result is a course that looks perfectly flat from the craftsman-style clubhouse on the hill above, but has plenty of movement when it’s played. It also features drought tolerant paspalum turf, a relative rarity in Southern California, almost equally rare bentgrass greens and very few trees. The course is not only new and differnt, it’s affordable by design, according to Frost. Greens fees top out at $69 with cart on weekends, with price incentives built in to help fill midday tee times in the heat of the summer. The course also has signed up more than 800 members in its Players Club for $99 a year and provides discounted play rates. Even before the course opened for play, it had 500 members. “We knew going in that a lot of our play during the week was going to be seniors,” Frost said. “We didn’t let the cost of the golf course drive the price to play the golf course, we let the market decide that. The whole Inland Empire is a price sensitive market — there’s a number there, and we’re where we want to be in that market.” — Jim Dunlap OSS A CR A LINKS EXPANDING THE GAME OF GOLF by Creating a team of Company Partners from the Golf Industry to develop "feeder short courses" (three, six or nine hole) across the country that provide affordable golf for youth, families, adult beginners and individuals with injuries and disabilities from all ethnic backgrounds.
