The company has invested just shy of $600 million on those acquisitions, more than half of which ($301 million) went to acquire 28 courses from the American Golf Corp. portfolio in November 2007. and CEO Bob Williams pulled off one of the past year’s biggest deals, finalizing an agreement with CNL Lifestyle Properties to run 28 courses purchased by CNL from American Golf Corp. late last year. The deal propelled Dallas-based EAGLE Golf to a course management portfolio of approximately 80 courses, one of the six largest in the United States. Munsch ore succeeding Hootie Johnson as chairman of the prestigious Augusta National in 2006, Payne was best known for being the driving force behind Atlanta’s successful bid for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Since taking over at Augusta, the media-savvy Payne has further opened access to the Masters Tournament, and positioned Augusta among golf ’s leading organizations. Bef 2007 Rank: Not ranked George O’Grady, Executive Director, European PGA Tour 2007 Rank: 22 European Tour was facing an uncertain future when O’Grady took over four years ago. It was losing some of its top young talent to the U.S. Tour and though his predecessor Ken Schofield had enjoyed success in growing tournament purses and creating the tour’s own TV production operation, it struggled to find an identity. Since taking on the job, O’Grady has created a new excitement, in part by expanding to India and South Korea and adding additional tournaments in China and Abu Dhabi. But his most singular accomplishment was masterminding the creation of the European Tour’s version of the FedEx Cup with the launch in 2009 of the Race to Dubai, a seasonending end with $10 million in prize money at stake, including $1.5 million to the winner. As part of the relationship with Leisurecorp, one of Dubai’s largest development companies, the Tour has established a new international office in that United Arab Emirate and a number of Tour professionals now live there. A native of Singapore, O’Grady said he has focused on creating long-term business partnerships that will benefit the tour. To that end, he’s raised the possibility of the tour building its own Ryder Cup course. More recently, O’Grady has become one of the industry’s primary advocates for adding golf to the 2016 Olympic Games. October 2008 www.GolfIncMagazine.com 27 The 19 http://www.GolfIncMagazine.com
