Bald Head’s logistical challenge
Golfing on an island can be a relaxing way to get away from it all, but renovating a golf course surrounded by water has its complications.
By CHRISTINA THOMAS There is something very alluring about playing golf on an island — the serene sound of waves rolling into the shore, the sight of tall palm trees swaying in the breeze. But as beautiful as the water and trees can be, they also present logistical challenges for operators, especially when the course is renovated. Bald Head Island Club in North Carolina faced such a challenge when it decided to renovate the course. The renovation began as a smaller project focused on restoring the greens, which had not been altered since the course opened in 1974. Robert Norton, general manager of Bald Head Island Club, said the project expanded when the contractors offered them a deal they couldn’t refuse. “The economy went south, so we took advantage of the opportunity,” Norton said. Shapemasters Inc. offered to do a full 18-hole renovation for a modest $4.1 million. Not everyone was willing to work for that price because of the tricky logistics involved. The only way to transport materials to the island is by barge. “[Shapemasters] did a very nice job with coordination,” Norton said. “It was a very daunting task, and I was proud of how they did.” Norton built the barge transportation into the budget, including exactly how many loads of sod, bunker sand, rolls of liner and cart path materials needed to be shipped over. By the time the project was completed, about 360 truckloads of product came over on the barge, which
