Chile While in Chile, Lauer learned firsthand how much culture can affect interpretation. Specifically, Chile’s penal codes addressing physical abuse, theft, fraud, conversion, robbery, economic abuse are written literally to protect all Chileans, with no exclusion or segregation based on age. “The discord between Chileans and Peruvians increased my awareness and interest in U.S. immigration issues because the situation here mirrors the relations between Californians and Mexicans,” she said. Lauer solicited her internship with the Servicio Nacional del Adulto Mayor (SENAMA) almost a full year prior to starting the internship last September. SENAMA is a public agency mandated by the Chilean government to establish, monitor, and promote legal rights and political awareness of older adults and the issues concerning aging. Unlike the United States, Chile’s legal system is run completely by code. “There is no common law,” she said. “Therefore, if there is no statute addressing a particular situation, there is then also no legal recourse available to the citizens of Chile.” Widener 2008 Summer International Law Institutes Sydney Venice Widener University School of Law Earn Law Credits Overseas This Summer Summer law institutes are offered in these amazing locations: ■ Venice, Italy ■ Geneva, Switzerland ■ Sydney, Australia ■ Nairobi, Kenya The application deadline is April 18, 2008. 2008 Summer International Law Institutes School of Law www.law.widener.edu/go/summer SLNJ08 January 2008 THE NATIONAL JURIST 49 http://law.widener.edu/
