China Sightseeing and even doing laundry can be a hard task given the language barrier for some on study abroad trips. Guter, who traveled to China this past summer with Duquesne Law School, said eventually though, other forms of communication help everything get resolved. “It’s so great to see that people are just trying to help,” she said. “You just have to work a little harder to communicate.” Guter studied at China University of Political Science and Law and attended class from early morning to the afternoon. A firm believer in human rights, she said she took away an understanding of Chinese law from her courses and traveling. “I really enjoy traveling and learning other cultures,” Guter said. “I think a lot of people forget what’s out there.” A 12-hour train ride through the countryside of China showed her some of the poverty in the country. Guter also got a first-hand look at how the city of Beijing is preparing for the 2008 Summer Olympics. For Guter, the only hard thing about the trip was finding something to eat. Being a vegetarian, she dined on pizza from Pizza Hut, tofu and cabbage instead of the regular Chinese cuisine. “It just opens a whole new world,” Guter said. “You have to be tolerant of cultures other than your own.” June 21 - July 19 Contact us at: 1.800.840.1122 • dsladmit@psu.edu For more information and online registration, visit our Web site www.ds l.psu.edu 54 THE NATIONAL JURIST January 2008 http://www.dsl.psu.edu http://www.dsl.psu.edu
