Comp. law Ranieri visited many places in Rome and Italy including the Palazzo della Guistizia, which is the home of the modern Roman courts, and all four major Basilicas — St. Peter’s, St. John Latern, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s. “This trip was definitely the trip of a lifetime for me,” she said. Erin Ranieri 4L, Duquesne Law School, Pittsburgh, Pa. Rome, Italy What began as a cold day in February ended on a warm summer evening in July, seated on the terrace of a convent, gazing out at the lights of the Vatican, as the bells of St. Peter’s basilica rang out. The opportunity was a trip of a lifetime, said Ranieri of her summer study at the Vatican City. Ranieri, currently a parttime student, took three courses in Roman Catholic Canon Law, Roman Law and the Legal Process of Canonization — all taught in the conference room of the convent they were housed in. The Istituto Maria Santissima Bambina convent located directly across the street from St. Peter’s Square was the perfect spot. Just close enough to hear the bells ring every morning. “I quickly learned to tell time by the pattern of the bells,” she said. Ranieri’s most thrilling experience was having the opportunity to attend a papal audience — hoping only to get close enough to hear the Pope’s blessing, “We were speechless when we found ourselves within arm’s reach of Pope Benedict as he entered St. Peter’s Basilica,” Ranieri said. “Armed with bags of rosaries purchased for family and friends, we looked more like street vendors than law school students.” ROME TOKYO 2008 SUMMER STUDY • • • • May 30–July 4, 2008 All instruction is in English.
