FORTHERECORD New name New England School of Law will now be known as New England Law | Boston. The name reflects the evolution of the school over the last century. The name and updated image are the result of several months of interviews with administrators, students, alumni and employers. “It was important for us to choose a name that differentiates us from other law schools in the region with very similar names, provides continuity with our old name and connects the school with its very appealing location in Boston,” said Dean John O’Brien. Paperless Professors and publishing executives met in Seattle to discuss how legal casebooks could be made available electronically on a widespread basis. Those attending the meeting said electronic casebooks would lighten a student’s heavy load and allow professors to customize the materials they require in their courses, according to coverage by the Connecticut Law Tribune. They were particularly interested in new instruments such as Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader. Stepping down Gary Simson, dean of Case Western Reserve University Law School, will step down at the end of the semester, and will be temporarily replaced by local attorney Robert Rawson. The announcement was made by Case Western President Barbara Snyder in an email sent in October to faculty, staff and students at the law school. Simson came to the law school from Cornell University’s law school in 2006, but had trouble winning the support of some important alumni early on. He also took heat after students posted some of the lowest bar passage rates in the state from the February 2008 exam. In the email, Snyder said that Simson would remain on the law school faculty, where his wife is also a faculty member. Student blog The Albany Government Law Review launched a student-written and edited law blog called the Albany Government Law Review Fireplace. Writers for the Fireplace will engage in substantive law review-like legal analysis and academic speculation. Unlike the typical blog, which publishes quick, often stream-of-consciousness entries, the Fireplace will publish entries that resemble shorter versions of law review comments and include citations on recent developments in government law and policy.
