challenge the conventional wisdom of the First Amendment. He previously served for 18 years as Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Har vard University, where he has served as academic dean and acting dean, and before that was a professor of law at the University of Michigan. His work on rules, legal reasoning, constitutional theory, and freedom of speech has been the subject of a book and symposia in Politeia, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and the Notre Dame, Connecticut and Quinnipiac Law Reviews. “I’ve tried to apply the same skepticism about free speech and how it encourages us to think about everything else,” he said. In his teaching, he tries to get students to think about the First Amendment in a more open-minded and balanced way than he thinks has been common over the years. A graduate of Dartmouth College, the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and the Harvard Law School, Schauer was the recipient of a university-wide Distinguished Teacher Award from Harvard University in 2004. When he first started teaching, faculty with degrees or serious training in other areas of law were rare but not unheard of. Areas such as politics, science, psychology and economics have all been influential in the area of law, he said. “I went to law school when there was still a draft and the activism and protests of the 1960 and early 1970s,” Schauer said. “The degree of career concern and focus on a certain kind of law practice was less prevalent. It was much more common to think that the first job after graduation was something they were going to do for the rest of their lives.” Today, a lot of law students, especially at major law schools, look at their first job as something that’s temporary and transitional.
