National Jurist - January 2009 - (Page 35) as a judge of the Family Court of the State of New York. Her scholarly work has been influential in the areas of child welfare, constitutional rights of family liberty and interdisciplinary analysis of legal pedagogy and process. “When I was a law student in the 1960s, we were very much operating under the illusion that there was some kind of hidden logic that would tell us the answers,” she said. “We were all kind of searching fruitlessly for that. Because of legal realism and thinking that’s come after, people no longer have faith in that hidden logic.” Today, students are much more realistic and pragmatic about what law is and how it’s formed and used. So, Davis and her colleagues are studying more realistic ways. “I hope that demystifies the process for students, so they won’t be as I was, searching for a logic for all the answers, but understand that as they become legal professionals they become the authors,” Davis said. HONORABLE MENTION AUTHORS OF THE CARNEGIE REPORT “EDUCATING LAWYERS: PREPARATION FOR THE PROFESSION OF LAW” Most of the law schools we talked to this past year in some way referenced The Carnegie Report when discussing curriculum and staff changes. Authors of the report, “Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law,” urged legal administrators to revamp curriculum in order to better prepare graduates for the practice of law. News spread of the new report, by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, during the American Association of Law Schools conference held in January 2008 in New York. The annual meeting’s theme “Reassessing Our Roles as Scholars and Educators in Light of Change,” brought the process of teaching students to “think like lawyers” to light. William Sullivan The report is written by William Sullivan, senior scholar at The Carnegie Foundation; Anne Colby; Lloyd Bond; Lee S. Shulman, Carnegie president and Judith Welch Wegner. Over two academic semesters, a research team visited 16 law schools in the United States and Canada, The schools were both public and private and were geographically diverse. In result of the findings, the authors called for law schools to offer an integrated, threepart curriculum, which includes the teaching of legal doctrine and analysis.
