of people, spanned over 80 percent of the state’s counties and collected over 130,000 signatures — with just 75,000 required to place the initiative on the state ballot. Burton said she chose to go to law school because of her long-standing interest in pro-life issues. “I’m definitely interested in the political side of it and there are a lot of good ways to work on it in the courtroom,” she said. Burton had previously volunteered on political campaigns, but this was the first time she worked on a constitutional amendment. “We were trying to look for something that would change the focus of the debate,” she explained. “We created a positive focus for the pro-life issue.” Though the amendment was ultimately voted down, Burton considers her cam- “As a law student, I felt like I had a special obligation and a special opportunity to learn and to help the process of democracy.” — Emily Kane paign a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It’s [about] the importance of putting the truth out there,” she said. “If one person’s life is saved or mind changed, it’s worth it.” The biggest challenge in Burton’s campaign was lack of funds. Both Kane and Burton said they learned a lot about the legal process through their active involvement in the 2008 election. They also both said that they plan to take their activist experiences and put them to work in the future. Kane, for example, plans to enter public interest law and work in the area of civil rights. “Get out there and do it,” Burton said for those interested in doing similar work. “There’s so much to learn [by] taking the chance.
