National Jurist - September 2007 - (Page 16) Renorda Herring, at left, has a passion for helping kids and hopes her program continues to grow. At graduation, Herring won the NCCU dean’s award for public service. She volunteered with Durham Teen Court — a teen-run legal system for first offenders under the Durham courts — as a 1L. The next year she recruited classmates to join her. She raised money to feed the homeless, organized Easter egg hunts, and even persuaded law professors to perform karaoke for students who raised the most money. Professors donated money to keep from having to perform. She’s organized ‘youth and the law’ programs for middle- and high school students. She helped teach on the court system and constitutional law at a school for kids suspended from their home schools. “Renorda has this vision of making this her life’s work — working in the alternative system, on the restorative justice model,” said Page Potter, director of NCCU’s pro bono program. Now that she’s graduated, Potter says Herring’s work will continue at Durham, just as it did in Atlanta. She says Herring’s diversionary program will be part of NCCU’s new dispute resolution program, begun just this year. Meanwhile, her Teen Court ‘cadre’ of law student volunteers continue to recruit students, with, among other tools, an intranet page on the school’s website. Next up for Renorda herself? Only the world. “It’s what I’m going to do for the rest of my life,” she said. “It’s my passion. Yes, I want to go to court, litigate, that’s exciting; but my passion is my program.” And not only in Atlanta, or Durham. “I’m praying I can get my program really started,” she said. “Hopefully in the next 10 years it’s going in a couple states. I’d love for my program to go around the world.” A passion continued from page 14 “The whole class gave him an ovation,” she said. He called her two years ago, while she was at law school. “Now he has a job … he has a girlfriend, and things are going well,” she said. “I didn’t go out of my way for him. I just told him to get his GED and I helped him get a job.” Leave a legacy While a law student she’s done just about everything the school’s pro bono program offers.
