National Jurist - September 2007 - (Page 8) FORTHERECORD Arrested •A law student accused of drunken driving April 26 may have been surprised to find out who she rear-ended — St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman’s city car. “She still doesn’t know who she hit yet,” said a police officer on scene two hours after the incident. “We’ve been telling her and telling her.” Abbie Raymond, a student at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, was arrested on suspicion of third-degree driving while impaired after her blood-alcohol content registered at 0.26 percent, police said. The legal limit in Minnesota is 0.08 percent. •A former campaign worker for U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry was indicted in May, a week before graduating from law school, on two counts of election fraud. Michael Aaron Lay, a graduate from the University of Tennessee Law School, was released on $50,000 unsecured bond by the Gaston County Sheriff ’s Office in time for graduation ceremonies. A grand jury indicted Lay because of questions about whether he had legal residence in North Carolina when he registered to vote and cast a ballot in his boss’ primary election. because he believed they were spying on him. Controversy •A Brooklyn law student who shed her briefs for a Playboy TV series may have to kiss off her career after the video made its way into e-mail in-boxes all over the city. Adriana Dominguez, a 3L at Brooklyn Law School, happily stripped naked for the 45-second clip called “Rock Star and the Lawyer.” “I wanted to do something a little crazy before I graduate and do become a lawyer… do something kind of out of character,” the 24year-old told the New York Daily News. “Lawyers can be boring.” •Roger Williams University’s law school has removed the name of its patron and university chairman Ralph Papitto from its building, after Papitto used the n-word. He said the slur during a heated conversation at a May board meeting about including more minorities on the board. He admitted saying it and apologized, saying it just “slipped out.” Students, school •Joseph Cho, a second-year law student at University of Pennsylvania, was arrested in January after he allegedly fired about 15 shots into the door of his downstairs neighbors’ apartment. Those that brought laptops were unable to save their work and upload files to transfer to graders. Each person wishing to use their computers downloaded the Secure Exam software program, which prohibits outside access to their computer during the test. Problems with the software became immediately apparent on the morning of the test when some candidates couldn’t get their computers to work. Students were then urged to write their essays in longhand. •A Wisconsin lawmaker is hearing “Objection!” from all angles after proposing to cut state funding for the University of Wisconsin law school. His rationale is that there are too many lawyers in Wisconsin. “We don’t need any more ambuSeptember 2007 lance chasers,” Rep. Frank Lasee, R-Bellevue said. Law School Dean Kenneth Davis said the plan would either force the school to jack up its tuition by $5,000 per year or cut essential programs. Though the plan appears to have little chance at surviving. Gov. Jim Doyle said the plan was “a really bizarre thing that came out of nowhere.” Recognized Phoenix School of Law received provisional accreditation from the American Bar Association in June and hopes to receive full accreditation in 2010. The school is owned by InfiLaw Corp., a consortium of independent, community-based law schools. It also owns Florida Coastal, and Charlotte School of Law in Charlotte, N.C. Its goal is to develop law schools in areas without a nearby source of legal education. Phoenix is scheduled to graduate 38 students in May 2008, its first graduating class since opening in 2005.
