National Jurist - October 2008 - (Page 10) NEWS Louisville School of Law raises money for fellowships Holding their lighters up in the air, students at the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law listened to music played by their fellow students and professors. For those music fans more of the professional mind of Perry Mason than Perry Farrell, there is Lawlapalooza, the Louisville, Ky., legal community’s annual battle of the bands held in October. The event celebrating the late Judge Ellen Ewing’s long-standing commitment to public service is in its fourth year. Proceeds go to The Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation, which provides summer fellowships for University of Louisville law students to work in the areas of family law, domestic violence and spouse abuse, and HIV/AIDS. The event originated when the Women Lawyers Association sought to honor the late judge, who died in 2004. The Louisville native and graduate of the Brandeis School of Law was the first woman to serve on Kentucky’s juvenile court bench. Two fellowships, hosted by the Louisville Legal Aid Society, have already been awarded. Jim Becker, assistant dean of information technology, performed with his band Elvis Cardozo and the Attractive Nuisances this year. He, along with fellow faculty members Tim Hall and Lars Smith, placed second in the inaugural Lawlapalooza back in 2005. “Even if we’re all competitors, we still root for each other, too,” he said. “Louisville’s a big small town, and we haven’t yet lost the sense of being neighbors, especially in the legal community, and especially among the even smaller subculture of people who are both attorneys and musicians.” The Lawlapalooza Planning Committee, which consists of local attorneys active in the Women Lawyers Association, staff members from the law school, the public relations director of the Louisville Legal Aid Society and Student Bar Association Social Chair Colleen Goodman, continues —Brian A. Lee to grow each year. 10 THE NATIONAL JURIST October 2008 http://www.law.louisville.edu http://www.law.louisville.edu http://law.scu.edu http://law.scu.edu http://law.scu.edu
