National Jurist - October 2008 - (Page 13) Organizations talk of boycotting AALS conference Law professors and legal writing professionals said they would boycott the Association of American Law Schools annual meeting in January if it is held at a San Diego hotel owned by a person verbally against same-sex marriage. Several years ago, the association booked rooms at the San Diego Marriott and the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The Hyatt’s owner, Douglas Manchester, has contributed money to a ballot initiative designed to overturn the California Supreme Court’s May decision in favor of same-sex marriage. The groups, including the Society of American Law Teachers, the Legal Writing Institute, the AALS Section on Legal Writing Research and Reasoning and the AALS Section on Teaching Methods, said holding the event at the Hyatt would conflict with their policies of nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation, according to the National Law Journal. In a statement adopted by the AALS Executive Committee in mid-August, members said they will honor their contracts with both hotels, and have exercised the option to hold all AALS events at the Marriott to ensure the maximum participation by its members. This isn’t the first year that organizations have talked of boycotting AALS conference meetings. A previous conference was moved from San Francisco due to an ongoing labor union dispute. —Michelle Weyenberg PHOTO BY MELISSA STOTTLEMYER The San Diego Marriott is located downtown overlooking the bay.
