National Jurist - October 2008 - (Page 21) Expand your global education an example for my family,” Orozco said. “I saw that my cousins were mimicking some of the things that I did when I was younger, and I saw the impact that I had on them.” Then he met Kevin LaChapelle, a former police officer who frequented the restaurant and soon became his mentor. “When I met [LaChapelle], he influenced me in a way that no one did,” Orozco said. “He got me thinking about my life and future.” But before even thinking about law school, he needed to finish high school. And that was another setback. Orozco was not a legal citizen. What soon became a seven-year process was difficult, but worth it. After getting his GED, he graduated from San Diego State University in 2006 with a double major in philosophy and political science. While a student at San Diego State, Orozco said he soon realized that law school would give him the tools he needed to make a bigger impact on his community. He’s currently studying employment and criminal law. “Kevin would talk to me about how our decisions affect others, and I started to see that,” Orozco said. “There are no excuses for the things that I did growing up. It’s just I was making bad decisions and that’s the bottom line.” Today, Orozco uses his past experiences to inspire kids that any challenges in life can be faced positively. “I can definitely connect with them,” he said. “They relate to me and I can relate to them. They come and ask me how I did this. It gives them a little hope because they see that somebody else did it.” As SBA president, Orozco said he wants to inspire his fellow students by making them aware of the impact they can have on the community, whether it’s honing programs for area high schools or forming mock trials. “I hope to accomplish a lot,” he said. “I want to make an impact.” n n with an LL.M. from Stetson University College of Law Earn an LL.M. in as little as nine months A semester abroad program in London available to LL.M. students Concentrations in international public law or international private law Practical skills opportunities in law firms and businesses n n For additional information, contact: Office of International and Graduate Programs Stetson University College of Law 1401 61st Street South n Gulfport, Florida 33707 (727) 562-7849 n international@law.stetson.edu www.law.stetson.edu/international REPRINTS Reprints are a simple way to put information directly into the hands of your target audience.
