He decided on Vermont Law School’s LL.M. program in environmental law and graduated in 2003. “When I saw the broad spectrum of the curriculum, that’s what really attracted me,” he said. Nelson said the greatest challenge was the physical and mental stamina that was required to go back to school in such a rigorous program. Nelson described the LL.M. program as the perfect learning environment for exploring different legal issues, policies and topics of discussion in the field, when it came to both the theory and the practice of environmental law. After graduating from University of California Hastings College of the Law in 2000, he began helping his father manage a family corporation, and he needed help with tax matters. His experiences at Vermont Law taught him that humans are not just the problem, but also the solution when it comes to environmental law. But the most rewarding part of the program came from the camaraderie Nelson felt with his classmates and their dedication to the program. “People are there for a reason,” Nelson said. “Not only do they deeply care about environmental issues, but they also felt a personal duty to do something about them.” Nelson said those interested in an LL.M. program should first try to narrow down their interests and find an area that fascinates them. Because an LL.M. presents a very specialized track of study, students should be sure they enjoy the area in which the LL.M. specializes before they sign on. “Where do [you] want to go when it’s all said and done?
