The program educates students about transnational transactions and litigation and helps them understand how different people approach the law, not just differences in laws, said Louis Thompson, the new assistant dean for Graduate and International Studies. Having an LL.M. can also add to an attorney’s credibility when dealing with lawyers abroad, Thompson said. Temple also offers an LL.M. in trial advocacy, which emphasizes the practical skills needed by trial lawyers. In addition to adding new programs, law schools are also realizing the demand for flexible LL.M. options — in fact, many law schools offer a part-time LL.M. option in addition to full-time programs. Taking flexibility to a new level, Western New England School of Law now offers its LL.M. in estate planning and elder law entirely online. Students participate in online classrooms live, take classes in the practical aspects of estate planning, and must draft a comprehensive estate plan before graduation. Thomas Jefferson School of Law’s Diamond Program also offers an LL.M. program in international tax and finance online; in addition, students can get a certificate in one of six areas of specialization — including e-commerce and wealth management — entirely online.
