National Jurist - November 2007 - (Page 16) Students ranked quality of teaching, practical skills training available, money spent on academics, and a few other criteria higher than school reputation according to other law schools, GPA and LSAT scores. “It’s very strongly biased against large schools, [there is a] bias against schools in large cities, and in favor of cities in less expensive areas.” —Professor Theodore Seto, Loyola Law School sage rate (50%), practical skills training available (44%) and student/faculty ratio (45.5%). “I am certain that I would not be who I am in law school today, or the lawyer I will ultimately become, had I depended upon the U.S. News & World Report rankings to navigate my law school selection process,” Platt said. Fickle rankings Seto’s study shows that law schools can impact their ranking by focusing resources in certain directions. “If one doesn’t actively manage one’s rankings, there’s the danger of one being left behind,” he said. Seto said the top two areas in which law administrators can focus on raising their ranking score are the placement rate and GPA factors. The placement rate, he said, is the most sensitive factor and most easily adjusted. Seto says schools should keep in mind that the employment variables do not only measure law-related jobs. (2 percent), money spent on other items (1.50 percent), and volumes/titles in library (0.75 percent). The National Jurist recently surveyed current law students to determine how the U.S. News factors stacked up against what they felt was important. We asked students, on a scale of oneto-five, to indicate how much weight they would give to a variety of factors if they were putting together a rankings system. The factors included the 12 used by U.S. News and seven new ones.
