But it is precisely working with so many cultures and legal traditions that gives international law firms more depth and results in more exciting work. “You get more diversity with respect to projects and clients,” said Moffatt. Plus, there are more chances to travel and learn about different legal traditions and ways of thinking, from visiting clients to helping out in one of the firm’s foreign offices. Interested in international practice? These top firms say they all want the same things in junior associates as other law firms: brightness, ambition, leadership, and proven hard work, says Learner. Additionally, Pollack adds that being attuned to different legal practices and sensitive to cultural differences may help you land the job—language skills or life experiences in living or working abroad, for example, can show your multi-cultural side. “Know the firm you’re going to interview at,” said Moffatt, who used to serve on Salans’ recruitment committee. “Don’t ask me about my Italian office — we don’t have one!” Though it’s not uncommon for international firms to relocate or “lend out” their associates to other countries, don’t interview with an international firm’s New York office if what you really want is to work in Paris; the hiring committee in New York isn’t hiring for other offices. At truly international firms like the ones on this list, you will surely be exposed to work and offices in other countries no matter where you get your start.
