Standing for excellence. Reaching for justice. said, so look for a program that promotes interaction between American and foreign students. Another important piece of advice from experts: Seek out schools that let LL.M. students take a wide variety of courses. “Will the school let you sign up for just about anything or just pretty much put you on one track?” Larson said. A school may have great rankings, reputation and faculty, but only limited course offerings. Some structure is necessary, however: Your best bet is a solid balance of core courses in a specific area of international law with some interesting electives to choose from, both within the LL.M. program and the law school in general. At Georgetown, for example, LL.M. students may choose from regular J.D. courses and a variety of electives in the school’s LL.M. programs. Also consider innovative joint LL.M. programs. American, for instance, offers an LL.M./MBA program that combines international legal study with business disciplines, and Northwestern University School of Law has partnered up with its Kellogg School of Management to offer a graduate LL.M. program in law and business that’s designed for foreign-educated lawyers. Finally, look to the future in choosing the right school. Does the school help LL.M. students find internships, externships, and employment? Are there any programs that are particularly useful when it comes to employment placement? Northwestern, for example, offers a two-year J.D. program for international lawyers. Its graduates have been highly placeable with American firms — they have not only the requisite education to sit for the Bar and practice law in the U.S., but also language skills and a network in their home countries that make them particularly appealing to employers, said Northwestern Dean David Van Zandt. “In general, there is a lot to learn in U.S. law schools [for foreign students,]” Grossman said. “Continue to be open to learning.” 36 THE NATIONAL JURIST November 2007 www.law.arizona.edu/TradeLaw http://www.wcl.american.edu/ilsp www.wcl.american.edu/ilsp http://www.wcl.american.edu/ilsp http://www.law.seattleu.edu/international http://www.law.seattleu.edu/international www.law.seattleu.edu/international
