National Jurist - November 2007 - (Page 44) denied the injunction and recommended the school’s decision,” Walters said. “Now, unions are more likely to consider outside administrators.” Walters likes labor law most because she gets a chance to negotiate and talk with many different people. like police departments, towns and cities, schools, and fire departments. “I do a lot of memos, briefs, and re search,” Walters said. “I interview clients, [conduct] depositions, and we’ve also had some temporary injunctions we’ve had to handle.” A growing field “Every case is so unique, and just when you think you’ve heard all the stories, something new comes along.” — Kelly Walters “Every case is so unique, and just when you think you’ve heard all the stories, something new comes along,” she said. Walters says she enjoys arbitration, which is less formal and requires less motions and filings than litigation. “It’s a better learning atmosphere and you also have more opportunity to interchange with the other party,” she said. Walters represents mostly employers, While Walters believes courses in labor law were helpful, she says her diverse work experiences were even more important. She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, did a judicial internship, and worked for K-Mart after graduation in a labor and employment position. “I can constantly look back and draw from [my experiences,]” Walters said. “All of it comes together somehow.” Labor and employment law is a fastgrowing, dynamic field that offers a wide range of practice — from litigation to inhouse counsel to government work. It’s a field of law that adds substantial numbers of new lawyers each year. Labor practices affect countless industries in the United States. Airlines, hospitals, trucking companies and even sports leagues are affected by the far-reaching economic impact of labor relations. The largest number of lawyers in the field represent employers, working either in law firms or on corporate legal staffs, with the second largest working for the federal government. Companies are finding the field increasingly complex as more employees initiate lawsuits. An important outgrowth of traditional labor practice is employment law. This is a broad area including all areas of the employer and employee relationship, except the negotiation process. SANTA CLARA LAW WHERE IN THE DO YOU WANT TO STUDY?
