According to the study, students at the lower ranked law school felt better about themselves, Krieger said, because they felt more supported there. Krieger said the key point to the study is that it simplifies things for law schools. “You need to create an environment that makes students feel the most supported,” he said. But Krieger also said it’s critical for students to know their definition of success. “If you pick a definition that is abundant — high grades and high money — it’s not going to make you happy,” he said. “Students need to know that success is remaining true to all their values, being very thoughtful and understanding what it takes to live a happy life.” Krieger recently formed a new section of the Association of American Law Schools — the Section for Balance and Legal Education. He’s also written two booklets, helping students with issues they typically face during law school. The Hidden Sources of Law School Stress and A Deeper Understanding of Your Career Choices apply modern empirical research about values, motivation, and life satisfaction to the thought processes and internal adjustments taking place in students. Krieger said the research generated at the two law schools isn’t the end of the study. But the incident did not affect the day-to-day operations of the school, he said. The school reinstated CLS before the settlement was reached. The agreement, which includes establishing a $10,000 scholarship fund for the society, allows anyone to attend the meetings, though they may not fit the requirements to be a voting party, Sievers said.
