preLaw - Back to School 2007 - (Page 23) from $2 million in 1995 to $7 million today. And the school has attracted and continues to seek private donations. “We’ve launched a ‘best-and-brightest’ full-scholarship campaign,” Broderick said. “It’s a three-year full scholarship, for up to 20 students annually.” The scholarship campaign is the first step in a long-term fund raising effort. The next step will be to raise money for a new building. “We’re included in the UDC campus master plan for a new building and the UDC president has said it’s a top priority,” Broderick said. Additional facilities will allow the school to increase the number of students from 300 to 500, the number of clinics — presently at seven — and permit introduction of dual-degree and part-time programs. In the meantime, the school is making steady site improvements, area by area. Last year, the school spent $1.6 million on a library renovation, delivering new computers, furniture, wireless networking, and smart boards. According to Dean Broderick, as the school grows, graduates will continue to be great public servants of the community, and the nation. Erin McFarland, class of 2007, is one good example. President of the UDC Student Bar Association, she has received a Covington & Burling Westwood Fellowship for Neighborhood Legal Services, an organization providing high-quality legal assistance to low-income D.C. residents. McFarland says her experience at UDC was both unique and positive. “We’re supportive of each other’s success,” she said. “In law school, that just doesn’t typically happen. These are people who really believe in me; they’re not just interested in competing for career placement.” McFarland says graduates are well pre- photo by bill petros pared to practice law. “By the time we graduate, we’re workready,” she said. “We’ve gone to court, interviewed clients, and written pleadings. Plus, we get the ongoing support of our classmates, and our community.” Guarding your private information has always been important to Access Group.
