More than 90 percent of all criminal matters are resolved through plea bargains without trial. Criminal lawyers must be good negotiators, investigators, counselors and even social workers. A certain amount of street smarts can be useful for both prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys. Many lawyers recommend taking criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence classes. There’s never a better time than the present to improve writing skills or gain experience in criminal law settings, whether through internships or clinics, for this specialty.
