preLaw - Back To School 2008 - (Page 11) can impact a statistic that law students consider when selecting a school, he said. Instead, Egertson said he recommends that prospective law students look beyond sites like LawSchoolNumbers.com. In fact, he said the site probably gets their figures in part from a report issued by the American Bar Association and the Law School Admissions Council. The resulting report, ABA-LSAC Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law School, has more comprehensive information, Egertson said, and it provides a more consumer-driven profile of U.S. law schools. Plus, its data is no more than a year old, which makes it a more accurate reflection of a law school’s current situa- tion. Egertson said he also encourages students to call their law school of choice and talk to someone about the attrition rates and what if anything the law school is doing to improve or change them. At Golden Gate, Egertson said officials counsel students with lower grade point averages, which can be a strong indicator of how a student is going to fare in law school. The law school also recently added mid-term exams to give students greater feedback on how they are doing. This allows students to make improvements or decide if law school is really for them. “We really want our students to succeed and we work individually with them to that end,” Egertson said. At Touro, officials are hoping their recent move to a new facility across the street from both a federal and state courthouse will help students get more practical legal experience. They also offer many educational opportunities such as a first-year Court Observation Program and a Public Advocacy Center, which can help a student learn more and better during their three years in law school. “We believe our new facility coupled with new programs and opportunities will address many prior student concerns and encourage today’s student to complete their education at Touro Law Center,” Raful said. > Visionary.
