Denning said that the biggest anxiety associated with taking the LSAT for the first time is generally a fear of the unknown. “This is a test that I can confidently say is unlike any other undergraduate or graduate level test that students have ever faced, which makes the LSAT an unfamiliar, and thus intimidating, undertaking,” Denning said. “Fortunately by practicing with real LSATs under timed conditions, test takers can accurately replicate the test-day experience and thereby familiarize themselves with the challenges of the real thing.” The test taker is then asked what can, must or cannot be true of the situation. If a student rushes into the questions, without a good sketch or diagram to manage all of the rules and information, he or she will wind up not only choosing wrong answers but wasting valuable time as well. Good prep will teach you to anticipate the kinds of logic and analysis that the test rewards and how to ‘front load’ your work, so that the application of that analysis to the questions goes like clockwork, Stohr said. 5. Fill in the blanks When you get to a question you can’t answer, it’s better to fill something in than leave it blank, according to the experts. Unlike the SAT and some other standardized tests, there is no ‘wrong answer penalty’ on the LSAT. So, you should fill in an answer for every question, even if it is just a blind guess. That said, quality preparation for the LSAT will provide the strategies and familiarity that make it possible to eliminate at least some of the wrong answers on most questions. On the LSAT, wrong answers come in identifiable patterns that students can learn to recognize and exploit to their advantage. 4. Patience is a virtue in steps to success As noted earlier, being patient and not feeling like you are running a race is a key to success in the LSAT. Stohr advises that being impatient is the biggest mistake a student can make. In the Analytical Reasoning section (often called Logic Games), students are given a situation (say, eight employees to be divided into two teams, or different sets of features to be assigned to different models of cars) with a set of rules or restrictions.
