preLaw Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 43) specialties LABOR & EMPLOYMENT What is labor & employment law? Labor practices affect countless industries in the United States. Traditional labor practices deal with the relations between workers and nd their employers. Attorneys play an important role in labor relations matters, providing assistance to both labor and management. These lawyers counsel their clients concerning plant closings, unfair labor practice charges and collective bargaining negotiations, according to “The Official Guide to Legal Specialties.” An important outgrowth of traditional labor practice is employment law. Labor and employment attorneys represent their clients in state and federal courts as well as in appeals. They work in government agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, state civil rights commissions and many others. Many attorneys in this field enjoy the intensive client contact involved in their jobs. They are also fascinated by the factual situations involved in their cases.
