preLaw Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 8) news LAW SCHOOL Admissions secrets revealed Joyce Putnam Curll, author of The Best Law Schools’ Admissions Secrets, says the most important aspect of the application process is preparation. “The application process takes a very short amount of time in the great scheme of your life and it’s important to think that what leads up to it is important and what leads on from it is important as well,” she said. Curll served 18 years as dean of admissions at Harvard Law School, where she evaluated more than 120,000 applicants for admission. Though she has retired from active duty, Curll said she’s working toward developing a program for the very group that inspired her to write the book. Her book, she said, is designed for anyone thinking about the idea of going to law school. She specifically wanted to address it toward people who have had little opportunity to learn from lawyers. “People would be surprised to find out that the law school is just as concerned about making a good impression on the student as the student is for the law school,” Curll said. “The admissions committee is looking at a whole lot more than just their grades and scores.” Curll said 99 percent of letter of recommendations are positive.
