specialties GOVERNMENT What is government law? Attorneys seeking a career in public service will find a multitude of opportunities in government practice. In addition to feda eral and state judges and prosecutors, government tor attorneys include att U.S. attorneys, U. public defenders pub and judicial law clerks. These agenclerks cies employ hundreds em of attorneys to assist with investigations, enforcement, interpretation of regulations and litigation, as well as to provide assistance to judicial officers within these organizations. Attorneys also work for regulatory and enforcement agencies at both the federal and state level, such as the Environmental Protection Agency and state pollution control boards. Local governments, including cities, villages, townships, park districts and water reclamation districts also employ attorneys. Government attorneys work for all three branches of the government at the federal, state and local level. Their clients work on a variety of cases, including those involving civil rights cases and municipalities. Employment and labor law are a growing area of practice within government law. Attorneys are enthusiastic about the public service aspect of their jobs and have a passion for their work. A great way to prepare for a career in government law is to work in your law school’s legal clinic. Working as a judicial law clerk after graduation also will help by building government contacts.
