preLaw Magazine - Spring 2008 - (Page 42) specialties REAL ESTATE What is real estate law? Residential real estate, in fact, is only a small part of the real estate field. Attorneys are involved in many transactions from hospitals to churches and parking lots. Real estate law concerns every aspect of commercial, industrial and residential transactions and investments. It involves issues related to the purchase and sale of property, including financing and development, property management and leasing and litigation relating to these areas. Lawyers who work on commercial real estate transactions often work in the real estate departments of large law firms. Other real estate lawyers work for the government, whether for county building and zoning departments or for municipalities. Other lawyers, often in small firms or in general or solo practice, generally handle residential real estate transactions. They also represent lenders and investors in n real estate financancing issues. Real estate lawyers may be called on to represent their clients before state and county commissions, city councils and community organizations or in state or federal court. While some real estate lawyers specialize in litigation involving contractual or regulatory issues, many specialize in real estate transactions or land use.
