Attorneys in health care law work on a myriad of issues — ethical matters involving patient care to business deals involving hospital mergers and acquisitions. H Health care attorney neys often represent ho hospitals and other h health care provider ers, such as nursing h homes, psychiatric ce centers and acute care centers. Many car work for law firms, often in large or mid-size law firms that have departments specializing in health care law. Organizations seek legal advice regarding general corporate matters such as employee benefits, tax and antitrust issues. The issues include review of staff by-laws, credentialing issues, disciplinary matters and the formation of physician-hospital organizations. Heath care lawyers also provide guidance concerning Medicare and Medicaid fraud, abuse and payment issues. Lawyers represent health care providers before federal agencies such as the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration and state agencies that regulate issues such as licensing, reimbursements and other administrative responsibilities. Heath care attorneys may also assist hospitals and health care organizations with many types of litigation, such as the defense of medical malpractice cases. Government agencies, including federal or state health and human services and social services agencies, also hire health care attorneys. Health care lawyers feel they are making a difference in people’s lives. They also enjoy the ever-changing nature of health care practice as well as the intellectual challenge it offers. Most have never seen a legal area in which the political, legal, economic and ethical issues change so rapidly. Often a lawyer’s academic training, work experience before or during law school or family background will spark an interest in the health care field. Others found their way through other people or by attending seminars. Health care attorneys recommend taking a broad range of law school classes.
