Most part-time law options tend to be in or near larger metropolitan areas. But the number of schools offering parttime programs is shrinking. Due to declining enrollment, Pace University School of Law in White Plains, N.Y., recently decided to phase out its part-time evening program. Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., also cut its program in 2009. In choosing a night-time program, law school administrators and students recommend the following: • “Look for a school that takes its evening program seriously and offers a broad array of courses,” said John Lynch of the University of Baltimore. • Make sure that the school has qualified faculty teaching in the parttime program. “Our faculty members say that our part-time students are the

if you change your mind or about allowing you to take an occasional daytime class. You’ll probably find that in most part-time programs, you can start out going part-time and later switch to full-time, but you have to stay in the evening track for the first year. • If you’re going to school at night, find out if there are good — and safe — connections to public transportation during the evening hours near your school. If you plan to drive, make sure there is reasonably priced parking close-by. Another amenity you’ll want is a place to grab a quick sandwich before class or during a break.
The challenges of part-time law school can be tough, but if you have the desire and energy, you can succeed in getting the J.D. you’ve always wanted, say the experts. ■
