dangerous animal that the county wants to euthanize.” Travis has also taught animal law at DePaul and Northwestern University law schools. She is former associate director of the DePaul Center for Animal Law. All that helped impress Chicago officials when she applied for her current job. Sometimes her work takes her into rescues of animals on the wilder side. One recent Friday night she accompanied police and the sheriff ’s office searching a home where they rescued some dogs — and an alligator. A two-year-old, two-and-a-half foot-long alligator was found, living in a tiny cage. “In Illinois it’s not legal to own an animal like that,” she said. “People don’t realize that those cute little animals they sell at swap meets will be fully grown in 10 years.” The gator was turned over to a local reptile society. In her job, Travis’s goals include crusading for more owners to have pets spayed and neutered and reducing the number of animals who are adopted — not euthanized. “In three to five years, I’d like to see this become a no-kill city,” she said. “The number of animals coming in the door has been dropping, but I can’t take credit for that. I think the drop in numbers is because of the many spay and neuter programs going on.”
