Schaumburg Live Work & Play - (Page 10) “Thought-Rise in Vacuum I” by Hans-Christian Berg of Finland is part of the International Sculpture Park at Schaumburg’s Prairie Center for the Arts. said. “We hoped the visiting public could enjoy nature and learn about the prairie environment while enjoying the works of art.” The addition of the 15 pieces occurred gradually within the first few years of the park. Though several of the pieces have withstood more than a decade of sun, snow and rain, only “Snails” by Greek sculptor Apostolos Fanakidis is in a current state of disrepair, being not originally intended for outdoor display. “The village has been very good about maintaining the sculptures,” Armistead said. In fact, “Heavy Dog Kiss” - a 7-foottall fiberglass and painted polychrome piece by New York artist Dennis Oppenheim - was recently returned to the park after a touch-up. Though the International Sculpture Park itself is considered complete, the village is adding sculptures around the pond on the north side of the Prairie Center. These pieces have been purchased through the village’s 1 Percent for Art program, in which approximately 1 percent of Schaumburg’s annual capital improvement fund is reserved for fine arts projects. The two pieces already on the property are “Ecce Hora,” or “Behold the Hour,” by Chicago artist Christine Rojek and “Waking Muse” by Don Lawler and Meg White of Kentucky. •
