Watching children’s eyes light up while exploring the center is a highlight for Morey, who hopes to construct Wrigley or Soldier Field. “This is a dream job,” he added. Morey finds that another highlight at the new facility is Spellbreaker, a 12-minute “4D movie” shown in a 110-seat theater. The thrilling tale of good versus evil is set in the Middle Ages. Families will feel the icy-cold frozen wastelands, the spray from the waterfall and the heat of the dragon’s fiery breath. Another popular attraction is the dragon castle ride. The train-like adventure winds through a castle passing guards at the gate and black bats with red glowing eyes. A huge dragon built from Legos blows smoke from its nose. About 350,000 Legos were used to create the adventure. Down the hallway, various characters, including Darth Vader, Harry Potter and Batman, greet visitors in the Hall of Fame. Children also enjoy the Build & Test area, offering a handson experience, said Legoland Attraction Manager Mike Pastor. The area provides children the opportunity to build cars and race them on a ramp, as well as construct a building and watch it tumble down on the earthquake table. “This is genius,” said Larry Goldman as he watches his 4year-old son, Deano, build with the plastic bricks. “This place is going to be a big deal,” Goldman said. The cost to visit the adventureland is $15 for children, $19 for adults and $17 for seniors. Annual passes are available, as well as birthday party packages for the three party rooms. However, many of the dates are booking up quickly. School groups, Girl Scouts and daycare facilities are also booking dates. Families typically visit two to three hours at the facility that features a café. “The kids could stay all day long,” Pastor said. That’s what Joseph Freed & Associates, landlord of Streets of Woodfield, likes to hear. The company that operates the urban street-front shopping center is pleased with the new entertainment venue that joins about 30 other tenants, including Gameworks, Dick’s Sporting Goods, a 20-screen movie theater, Maggiano’s and Shaw’s Crab House. Legoland in Berlin has been a hit, attracting more than 500,000 visitors annually. Headquartered in Billund, Denmark, The Lego Group was founded in 1932 in a small carpenter’s workshop. Over the past 75 years, it has become the world’s sixth-largest manufacturer of toys. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder, now owns the growing Lego empire. The Schaumburg facility is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except Christmas.
