Miller didn’t board Flight 232 because his grandpa died, but because his tiny commuter plane from Durango to Denver was delayed. That delay caused him to miss his connecting flight from Denver to Chicago, a flight that took off and landed without incident. Miller caught the fateful flight because he wanted to fly on a DC-10 jumbo jet, and not a different aircraft with open seats departing Denver at nearly the same time. The reason? The seasoned traveler chose the DC-10 because of its reputation for serving better in-flight meals. Actually, he lived because he requested to switch from seat “20-something” B to seat 16G, next to a middle seat. Most of the people seated in the “20-something” B section were killed. That day, Miller nearly died because of a confluence of seemingly insignificant choices and chance events. But that’s not what Miller believes. Miller believes he caught the plane and survived the crash, because that was God’s plan. Schaumburg resident and business owner Jeff Miller lives every day as if it were his last. Miller has beaten the odds, surviving one of the nation’s worst airline disasters in commercial aviation history, thanks to a little divine intervention. In the summer of 1989, Miller packed up the family car and headed cross-country to visit his wife’s family in Colorado. After traveling 1,000 miles with his pregnant wife, two toddlers and the family dog, their vacation was cut short after Miller received some unwelcome news - his grandfather passed away. As the family’s oldest surviving male member of the family, the then 29-year-old was to return home to deliver his grandfather’s eulogy. Miller quickly booked a flight home to Chicago. Unexplainable Choices There are many things that can’t be explained.
