Still, he hopes people can find some way to apply his experience to their own lives. “In any size room, at least one person is going through an airplane crash of life: someone you love has a disease, financial difficulties, etc.,” Miller said. “The picture I want to paint is the power of our keeping hope alive in our minds. Of all the things we have, the one thing we can control is our own mind.” Lessons Learned Of course, there are some uncomfortable corollaries to the theory that Miller was “supposed” to survive that crash. Namely, if God wanted Miller and the other 183 passengers who survived the flight to live, then he must have wanted the 112 who didn’t to die. Miller, who estimates he’s given more than 300 public speeches about the crash, does believe he was meant to live – but not because he was more deserving of life. “Some people think if it was divine destiny, then somehow they must be better. I never felt that. I just felt like this was my deal,” he said. Lots of very good people lived on that flight, and lots of very good people died, Miller emphasizes.
