Elaborate desserts such as mouth-watering strawberry shortcake, complete with rum-glazed strawberries and drenched in a Kahlua-flavored chocolate sauce, impress but nothing says comfort food like a good oldfashioned root beer float – just like Mom used to make. Upstairs, John Barleycorn boasts a high-ceilinged area doubling as both a premier concert venue and dance club on alternating nights. The 1000person capacity room pulsates with the beats of a revolving door of skilled DJs, including Roonie G. Based in Las Vegas, the self-proclaimed DVDJ mashes old-school rock acts like Queen with purveyors of the new guard like Kayne West against a backdrop of fitful video snippets. Barely-dressed go-go dancers clad in knee-high furry boots flank both sides of the stage, to the delight of the stationary males scattered about the undulating sea of bodies. Despite the Schaumburg locale and absence of a required dress code, the line holding vigil outside could partake in a casting call for the latest Los Angelesbased reality show. Staggering heels, minuscule hemlines and lots of bared shoulders instill fear in the hearts of any who dare to show up in shoes paired with white crew socks. A cover charge applies to entry upstairs, but tightfisted friends can bask in the television screen glow of the bar.
