What’s going on in the world of entertainment throughout the Schaumburg area. hicago sculptor Christine Rojek “beholds the hour.” With the mentality of “every day counts,” Rojek built an adjustable sundial, featuring hand-painted aluminum figures that twist, dive and somersault, symbolizing the passage of time. The concept of the piece, Rojek said, is based around making a decision. “I got attached to the idea ‘now or never,’ the passage of time and the concept that every day counts,” Rojek said. After many hours of research, Rojek custom-built this unique piece, strategically positioned to act as a working sundial. If you ever lose track of time, visit Rojek’s structure at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center. Rojek’s work is part of Schaumburg’s 1% for Art program, created in 1999 to enhance public areas within the community through the purchase of large pieces of artwork. Funding for the program is $75,000 a year. Inspiration for the work comes from visiting art shows and public art pieces displayed in other cities, viewing artist Web sites, and through the direct solicitation of proposals from artists. Thus far, the program has funded six distinct works of art, including Rojek’s. Other works of art include a bronze depiction of a farm couple at Schaumburg’s Town Square, entitled “Spirit of the Prairie,” by sculptor David Alan Clark; Veterans Gateway Park at the intersection of Schaumburg and Roselle roads; “Awaking Muse,” a monumental sculpture carved from Indiana limestone by Kentucky sculptors Don Lawler and Meg White, installed on the grounds of the Schaumburg Municipal Center; Schaumburg’s Public Safety Memorial, including a carved brick mural depicting scenes of Schaumburg police officers and firefighters by Jay and Dean Tschetter; and scheduled for installation in the fall of 2008, a Native American piece entitled “Heart of the Basket Weaver,” to be installed adjacent to Town Square’s Trickster Gallery by New Mexico artist Cliff Fragua. 34 38 Page 4 Hot Spot!
