by eric peterson F Sculpture park live or lovers of art and the great outdoors, Schaumburg’s International Sculpture Park - tucked away on the grounds of the Prairie Center for the Arts - provides an opportunity to stretch the muscles and the mind. Comprised of 15 dramatic and thought-provoking pieces from artists around the world, the park is a joint project between the Chicago Athenaeum and the village of Schaumburg. The Athenaeum, established 20 years ago as an international museum of architecture and design, is now headquartered in Galena, Ill., with a satellite location in Athens, Greece. Fourteen of the sculptures stand along a bike trail just south of the Prairie Center for the Arts at 201 Schaumburg Court, stretching east to Plum Grove Road north of Gospel Presbyterian Church. The 15th piece, “Fiber Wave” by Tokyo-based artist Makoto Sei Watanabe, sits beside the eastern entrance of the Prairie Center itself. The park’s other pieces hail from Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Switzerland and the U.S. Each sculpture’s precise location on the 20-acre property was carefully chosen to best display it, the village’s Director of Cultural Services Betsy Armistead said. The profound atmosphere of serenity and thoughtfulness that envelops the park draws all types of visitors.
