Schaumburg - Live, Work, Play - November/December 2008 - (Page 19) “We look for new initiatives to grant, that impact as many students as possible,” says Donna Anderson, a foundation board member. More than 20 years ago, parents in Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 created the foundation to raise money privately. The money would provide schools with things that tax money couldn’t. Over the years, the nonprofit foundation has raised increasingly more money, meaning its grants have gotten even more significant. Officials say that over the last five years, foundation events have generated more than $200,000. With that money, it has supported programs in math, science, literacy, music, visual arts, nutrition, health and wellness, as well as before and after school, and summer athletic programs. Teachers across District 54 have been submitting grant proposals already this school year. The foundation awards “mini” grants up to $500, project grants of $1,000 and one super grant benefiting an entire school population. Eisenhower Junior High School in Hoffman Estates was the first recipient of a super grant. Counselors implemented a schoolwide social skills initiative, called the “Earn & Learn Program.” All students, especially the school’s at-risk population, benefited from the program that addresses the five dimensions of social skills, officials said. Another foundation grant remains on display at Nerge School in Roselle, where an Second grader Fatima Mahmood cheers as entire wing of the school features individual self-portraits of its more than 600 students. more beanbags of her color make it through Foundation members said the program helps build awareness of cultural the hoop at the Peaceful Playground at Lakedifferences and different levels of abilities, while having an overall unifying effect on view Elementary School in Hoffman Estates. the school population. The District 54 foundation draws wide support in the community from parents and local businesses, but also from teachers in the district, who make up a good percentage of the donations through payroll deductions. Last spring, the foundation distributed approximately $10,000 in Memorial grants. Working with the social workers, the foundation targets students who might not be able to afford certain enrichment programs such as music, sports and science camps, as well as other enrichment programs. • Elementary School Foundation Schaumburg TownShip Announcing Our New Location!
