Schaumburg Live Work & Play - January/February 2009 - (Page 17) by ashok selvam M ost Schaumburg residents probably never heard of Frank Russo until after Halloween night this past fall. Though he served the community for 19 years, Russo spent the last 10 or so on the night shift, patrolling the streets to keep Schaumburg safe while most of its residents were asleep. But for those who had the pleasure of knowing him, he left an impression – whether it be with a smile or a subtle, yet friendly expression. “He was the person you always wanted to stand behind you if there was an issue,” said Kristen McAtee of the man she affectionately knew as Frankie. “You always felt 10 feet tall and bulletproof with Frankie behind you,” she said. As property manager at the Tree House apartments, McAtee got to know Russo on a daily basis over the past decade. He made regular visits to the apartment complex as part of Schaumburg police’s beat No. 8. He’d respond to domestic disputes, noise complaints or whatever else was going on at the 725-unit complex near Old Plum Grove and Meacham roads. “He touched a lot of people here,” McAtee said. It’s been hard for Schaumburg to fill the void left by Russo. He was the first officer to die while on duty in the 49-year history of the Schaumburg Police Department. “He was a brother and friend,” Det. Greg Klebba recalled during Russo’s funeral. Several residents from Tree House attended the funeral to pay their final respects.
