How it all started Budd Friedman, the founder, started the club in 1963 in New York City. It started off as an after-hours club, says Baldino. At the time newcomers like Dustin Hoffman would play the piano, and Bette Midler would sing impromptu at the club. Occasionally, comedians would tell jokes.
