Schaumburg Live Work & Play - March/April 2009 - (Page 14) Ready to fly Flyers’ new manager is here to win by tom quinlan If any of the 2009 members of the Schaumburg Flyers ever get the urge to challenge their 6-foot-5 manager this season, they might want to think twice about it. While they’re at it, perhaps they should take a longer look at Mike Busch’s resume as well as his imposing size and strength before confronting their 40-year-old manager. Not that Busch would ever threaten them physically, but they should know going in that this former major leaguer and baseball lifer has spent his entire athletic career taking risks and never backing down from the task at hand. While rebuilding the Schaumburg Flyers into a playoff contender represents his latest challenge, he has bucked longer odds before: After a sterling high school career in Davenport, Iowa, he chose to play two sports at Iowa State University in Ames. Busch not only attempted two sports in college, but he excelled at both, earning All-American honors in baseball (1989) after hitting .401 as a junior, and he also was voted a consensus All-American in football as a tight end (1989) to several national Page 14 schaumburg live • work • play
