Schaumburg Live Work & Play - March/April 2009 - (Page 26) Get your GREEN on by jean murphy Every year St. Patrick’s Day is like a beacon, shining through the flakes and drifts of snow, offering the sun-starved hope that spring really will come eventually. Conventional wisdom says that once you make it past the Irish holiday, the snow won’t come as often and when it does come, it won’t stay terribly long. So prepare to celebrate the snake-chaser’s day with gusto at many events in and around Schaumburg. The village’s two Irish establishments, Finn McCool’s Irish Sports Pub, 1941 E. Algonquin Road, and Houlihan’s, 1901 E. Golf Road, plan to celebrate – one in a high-spirited manner and the other with a rather low-key celebration. Finn McCool’s Irish Sports Pub will kick off their St. Patrick’s celebration when they host the Schaumburg Business Association from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 5. The party will include corned beef, beer specials and lots of green beads. On St. Patrick’s Day, Finn McCool’s will offer corned beef and green beer specials and will bring in bagpipers from 5 to 7 p.m. to enhance the Irish feel of the sports bar on that most Irish of days, according to Megan Osterhout of Ala Carte Entertainment. There will be other live entertainment after 7 p.m., as well. Vist finnmccoolschicago.com for details. In addition, beginning on March 1 you can register for Finn McCool’s St. Patrick’s Day giveaway. The grand prize is a weekend getaway for two at the Irish Cottage in Galena and second prize includes four Cubs tickets. The winners will be announced on March 17. Houlihan’s, which is located in the out-lot of Woodfield Shopping Center, offers a special corned beef dinner and beer specials all day on St. Patrick’s Day in both the restaurant and the bar. They will also offer specials on cocktails and domestic draft beers in Page 26 the bar portion only all day. In addition, between 4 and 7 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to closing there will be deals on appetizers in the bar. On parade Parades are part and parcel of St. Paddy’s Day in Illinois. The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the South Side Irish Parade are legendary, of course. Both will be held Saturday, March 14 and families wishing to travel to see them can enjoy Metra’s weekend family fares from the Schaumburg train station at 2000 S. Springinsguth Road. Up to three children, 11 and under, can ride free on weekends with a fare-paying adult. Check Metra’s Web site, metrarail.com for further information as the big weekend approaches. If you want to see a parade without traveling to Chicago, check out Naperville’s 16th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It starts at 10 a.m. and runs from Naperville North High School down Mill Street, turning on Jefferson, Main and Water streets. Organized by the West Suburban Irish organization, the parade features approximately 100 units and includes bands such as The Naperville Highland Guard bagpipers, The Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums and schaumburg live • work • play http://www.metrarail.com http://www.finnmccoolschicago.com
