Quest Demo - (Page 5) give them their own troop, and worked together to create Troop 341. The group started from scratch, with no equipment for campouts or other Scout activities. David’s grant, which will match every dollar the troop raises, will go toward a trailer the group can use to store and transport their donated equipment. David’s story embodies the mission of the KT Community Foundation. He dedicates his spare time to mentoring teenagers and helping them to be productive and service-oriented. His good works help others to do good works, providing a true demonstration of DaVita’s dedication to sending forth ripples of citizen leadership. SChooL SUPPLIES and BaSKETBaLL Social worker Carl Newhouse has the same spirit. He says, “The type of community work I do may change, but it’s always helping people.” Carl has directed the Parkland, Washington, Back-to-School Hoopfest for six years. Using basketball as the draw, he and 100 other volunteers provide health care screenings, school supplies, face painting, music, entertainment and activity to 1,000 school-age children and their parents. The services and fun are needed in an area that is one of Washington’s most underprivileged. Carl, a strong advocate for education, also uses the event to stress the value of school. Carl and his wife Sheron put more than 700 hours of their time into planning the Hoopfest each year. Carl is dedicated to enriching the lives of inner-city children because he once was one. He was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles and credits his grandmother with helping him come through the difficulties of his upbringing to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. “I want to give back because someone gave back to me,” Carl says. His KT Community Foundation grant has allowed him to do that, facilitating multiple educational resource centers at last year’s Hoopfest, along with a PA system and higher-quality school supplies to distribute than in previous years. Carl’s dream for the Hoopfest is to expand it to other inner-city Washington areas and that kind of continued outreach and growth is what a KT Community Foundation grant is all about. BIKES FoR aLL Lisa Walk, an IT Business Analyst at the Lodge, DaVita’s business office in Lakewood, Colorado, is also committed to helping underprivileged kids have fun while learning. She worked for months to plan the Annual Community Kids Bike Fair, which gives bikes, helmets, locks and Lisa Walk repairing a bike at the Annual Community Kids Bike Fair 5
