Briggs has a diverse portfolio with pre-Raphaelite-inspired goddesses, Biblical scenes, and cubist nudes among the many pieces he has created. “Sometimes the creativity just flows and it comes to you,” reveals Briggs. T By Kailash Maharaj and Shivana Maharaj Stained glass is the art form of the engineer and artist. It requires patience and skill and yet its foremost artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany and William Morris have become well-known throughout the world. Boasting a history inextricably linked to the churches of Europe, stained glass has long been revered for its awe-inspiring beauty. Think of the rose window of Notre Dame or mention a Tiffany lamp and images of grandeur are immediately conjured. For Briggs, though, a down-to-earth attitude permeates his work. “Everyone has their own style. We are happy with the way things are,” he says when asked about what differentiates his work. After completing four years at the Alberta College of Art, Briggs founded his eponymous design studio in 1969. It began as a graphic design studio where sculpture and art were done on the side. Then, in 1977 Briggs’ wife Cheryl Cote joined the studio which, besides designing and creating stained glass, also includes a gift shop, pottery, hand-crafted jewellery, sculpture, and other art pieces created by Briggs, and Cote. In addition, Briggs Design Studio also features a number of other artists, many of whom are Canadian. Cote also teaches classes in stained glass on Saturdays mornings. “We take great pride in our work, the craftsmanship, attention to detail,” beams Briggs. He estimates that smaller pieces take a few days to complete, larger pieces take considerably longer. “The church piece I did was twelve feet tall and it took six weeks to complete.” COURTESY BRIGGS DESIGN STUDIO Briggs’ pre-Raphaelite woodland goddess, plays a lyre a field of Springtime flowers blossoms in a client’s home citystyleandliving.com | SPRING 2008 | 11 http://citystyleandliving.com
