City Style and Living - Spring 2008 - (Page 3) Welcome Inside City Style & Living FROM THE EDITORS LOST AND FOUND One of the casualties of the magazine world is the abrupt departure of a beloved title. The writer’s strike in Hollywood shut down and entire industry and viewers were outraged and upset. But when a magazine goes, the sounds are less vociferous. Suddenly, an announcement is made that so and so will no longer be publishing such and such. It happened to George, Life, House and Garden and countless others. With each passing, it begs the question, what have we lost? What, is a magazine’s purpose? In a world where soundbytes predominate, bloggers are rampant and information news is available twenty-four hours a day, what is the purpose of a magazine? When we set about defining the vision of City Style and Living certain words kept reoccurring – beauty, and inspiration, for instance. These are attainable only after the soundbytes have been dissected, the words meditated upon, the sounds linger. A magazine, then, takes the soundbytes and explores them, digests them. It is languid, slow, drawn-out. It is a repository of ideas, a compendium of thoughts. We are not saying that insight cannot come immediately, instantaneously, but for City Style and Living, our purpose is to provide our readers with lasting impressions. When House and Garden was disbanded, the industry was surprised because the magazine spoke so clearly to a specific group of people. It told stories they relished and created images they identified with. It had celebrated so clearly their way of life that it had become a part of their life. A magazine is supposed to be as readable in one-hundred years as it is today. Fashions may change, tastes may alter, new methods may be invented, but the essence of things remains the same – a magazine, a relevant magazine, speaks through the ages.
