City Style and Living - Spring 2008 - (Page 43) City style & Living travel Who wouldn’t love a face like this? The strange mediaeval beast (the gargoyle pictured at left) imaginatively recarved by the masons working on Holy Trinity Church, in Stratford-uponAvon, England holds an important secret. It sits atop the church where William Shakespeare, the great dramatist and playwright, was baptized, worshipped and was buried. It was in this church where he first heard the Biblical language that influenced his work so fundamentally. But this is not the gargoyle’s secret. Holy Trinity Church, set against a beautiful, lush backdrop is slowly crumbling – windows leak, deathwatch beetle has infested the wood and dry rot is rampant. The charity, The Friends of Shakespeare's Church was founded in an effort to raise funds to restore the church. The Friends aim to raise £3.8 million to restore the church and they have already given more than £500 000 to restore the tower and spire, and part of the chancel roof and parapet. The organization is now turning their attention to the restoration of the windows in the clerestory, the upper stages of the nave and the historic gravestones of William Shakespeare, his wife and family. The Bard would be proud! PASSPORT For $100, you can sponsor one of them, and receive a photograph and a certificate of sponsorship. E-mail the Friends at friends@shakespeareschurch.org for more information. Go to www.shakespeareschurch.org to find ways of donating to support the Friends, or join them. YOU CAN HELP! Tell us about your trip, by writing to: editors@citystyleandliving.com Arrivals/Departures name: Vicki Smith Just returned from: Beautiful cayo Santa Maria, Cuba. COURTESY FRIENDS OF SHAKESPEARE’S CHURCH inspiration for visiting: My sister and I love to travel to warm climates with lots of palm trees, and we decided to give Cuba a try. We were well pleased with our accommodations and the people of Cuba are so amazing. They are happy, giving people and they love Canadians. Must see: A must see when visiting Cuba is a trip to Havana City It is truly amazing! Everyone was so happy to have taken this side trip. We also took lots of school supplies to give to the children of the workers in our resort. They are such grateful people the look on their faces when we gave them calculators was so worth the extra luggage! not worth the hype: The white sand beaches and the turquoise waters are absolutely amazing. The rum is deadly and the cigars are first rate. The food was great for me, but I am vegetarian, so I had no complaints. Their lobster was delicious and the fish fresh and well prepared. The buffet was huge and had everything you could ever want to eat (except hamburgers and fries). I did hear complaints about the lack of good beef, but if you cannot go two weeks without hamburgers, then you should not go to Cuba. best souvenier from your trip: I did not spend much money as it was an all inclusive, but did get some really nice little wooden boxes that are made with the local trees of Cuba. We did buy cigars for our families and they were very happy with the quality of them. item that you wish you had packed: I wish I could have packed more things to give to the staff, but our luggage weights were restricted. Would you return: My sister, brother in law and I have agreed that it was one of our best holidays so far and we will definitely go back! citystyleandliving.com | SPRING 2008 | 43 http://www.shakespeareschurch.org http://citystyleandliving.com
