Blessed with abundant seafood, coconuts, taro, macadamia nuts, and exotic fruit, Maui is a gourmand's paradise. the Valley isle produces a vast array of dining choices and boasts an array of affordable international and local cuisine that will be sure to please the most finicky appetites. on a recent visit to the family friendly island, we sampled delicacies from lahaina to West Maui to upcountry, and throughout, we found great, affordable places to eat. by Shivana Maharaj and kailash Maharaj EAST MAUI/ WEST MAUI Renaissance Wailea Resort (Marriott) Sunset Luau The most famous celebration, requisite to any Hawaiian vacation, is a luau. At the Renaissance, dinner is served buffet-style on large rectangular tables, seaside, with a spectacular view of the ocean. Volcano huli huli chicken, fresh mahi mahi and the ubiquitous roasted kalua pig are served alongside Hawaiian staples like sweet potatoes, fried rice and poi (mashed taro). The traditional fare is accompanied by plenty of greens, vegetables and sweet fruit. The large dessert spread is hard to resist, and there was plenty of food for second (and even third) helpings. The real highlight of the magical evening was the most spectacular sunset, a prelude to the amazing Hawaiian and Polynesian dancers. The ambiance, the traditional Polynesian music, and the cast of beautiful dancers, performing hula and playing with fire, make for an unforgettable evening with your family or loved one. This evening will make for fond memories, the best kind of souvenir.
